Ultraplanets is a fictional astronomical atlas created by manipulating NASA’s archive and candid shots. Images captured by probes and telescopes are dissected and recombined with unrelated photographic fragments to create new imaginary worlds.
The process of breaking up and reassembling is integral to the series and it consists of different steps and techniques. This includes simple digital manipulation of images and experimental darkroom methods such as employing homemade plant-based formulas instead of traditional chemicals, or directly painting on developed photographs.
The resulting images are printed on different media types and in varying qualities, ranging from silver gelatin to video or inexpensive digital printouts. The project acquires a high degree of stylization and interpretation, establishing a connection between the process and the concept of creating something new from an archive.
